When the body is stressed, the hypothalamus gland signals the nervous system and the pituitary gland to produce the stress hormones epinephrine and cortisol. These chemicals are produced by the adrenal glands.
When these hormones are released, it starts the process of energy your body needs to run from danger. At the same time once cortisol and epinephrine are released, the liver produces more glucose and blood sugar that gives energy for the flight or fight response. If we don’t use up all that energy, the body can re-absorb the sugar. For some people, especially those vulnerable to diabetes, this reabsorption or non-reabsorption causes major problems. For example difficulty controlling blood sugar levels and weight gain/loss.
One solution: take time out to do those things that relax your body and mind. A tea break, a walk at lunch time, deep breathing and of course my favourite- a massage on my day off!
